Finding Furniture a New Home
The Community Furniture Store has been recycling furniture in York for over 25 years, since 1988. A second store was established in Selby in 2004. A third store to serve Scarborough and parts of Ryedale is now open in Scarborough.
We seek donations of furniture and white goods which are suitable for reuse and make them available at low cost to people who need furniture. Over the years, thousands of local households have been helped to furnish their homes.
The Stores have been expanded and upgraded in recent years, so they now carry a wider range of stock than ever before.
Open to the general public, customers are welcome to visit and browse at leisure. See local Store pages for opening times and locations.
Recently, the York and Selby Stores have together saved over 14,000 items each year, weighing nearly 400 metric tonnes, from being added to the landfill mountain. The more donors and customers we have, the more re-use we can encourage, reducing landfill and protecting the environment.
The Stores also offer volunteering opportunities and work experience placements. Electrical goods are tested, cleaned and repaired at York. At workshops installed at Selby since November 2011, local people repair and improve wooden furniture, re-upholster chair seats and create shabby chic and other imaginative items.
