MULTI STORY PICTURE HOUSE
Leeds’ first and only independent drive-up cinema

From 17-19 July 2020 Multi Story Picture House presents Drive-up Cinema – a socially distanced
outdoor cinema experience, organised to give you something to look forward to during lockdown.

Based at Bowcliffe Hall in Bramham, Multi Story Picture House will be showing 9 screenings across
3 days with films ranging from cult classics to kids films to musicals. There will be something for
everyone and, priced at £27.50 per car, it is the most compe11vely priced drive-in cinema around!

When the work stopped coming in, Rhian decided to focus on creating her own.

The experience has been founded by University of Leeds Alumna Rhian Hughes, a self-employed
events manager based in Farsley. When Covid-19 struck and lockdown was announced, like many
other self-employed people, Rhian unfortunately had all future work contracts cancelled due to the
uncertainty around live events in a socially distanced world. As well as this, due to being recently
self-employed, she also fell through the cracks of support provided by the government, meaning she
is one of the estimated 3million+ people who are unable to claim for any of the self-employed or
small business grants on offer.

After speaking to others in the events industry about their experiences, and determined to make the
best of the situation, Rhian decided to launch Multi Story Picture House, investing all remaining
personal savings into the event.

‘When lockdown was announced it really hit me hard. I felt completely hopeless, not knowing how
or when I was going to be able to find work again. I just wanted to do something – anything – to
use my skills to help those who had been feeling a bit helpless like me, and that’s when Multi Story
Picture House was born. Whether it was giving someone sat alone at home an experience to look
forward to, or being able to provide work to other local businesses whose projects had been
stalled, I wanted to do something. I knew how awful it felt to have no sense of purpose or
direction when this all began, and hope that this has been a small light in the dark for some of
those who have been feeling like that too.’

‘The support for Multi Story Picture House so far has been incredible, from those online as well as
in the events industry too. Tickets are on sale now, but I would be lying if I said it had been an
easy journey to get to this point. Going up against some of these national outdoor cinema giants is
really difficult, when they have much further reaching marketing resources and budgets than I do,
but I’m hoping that the support continues through to the event! The events industry has really
been left in the dark when it comes to clear government guidance on how to navigate the
difficulties of Covid-19. Live experiences are so crucial to our culture and our overall well-being
and so many amazing things are going to be lost if we don’t do something now. Whether it’s
donating to a theatre or not requesting a refund on pre-booked festival tickets, there are lots of
simple ways to support these institutions and ensure they will be there for us again when it is safe
to open again.’

In order to maintain safety at the event cars will be socially distanced according to the most recent
government guidelines. Guests will be checked in by scanning their tickets through their car
windows (as is practised at Covid-19 testing stations), and food and drink will be available to order
via an app, with orders being delivered straight to their cars.

We are proud to be supported by 3 amazing Yorkshire businesses: Northern Bloc ice cream, North
Brewing Co., and Yorkshire Crisps. Products from all of their ranges will be available to purchase at
the event through our brand new digital app, which will be launching at the beginning of July.

Rhian is a graduate of the University of Leeds and has previously worked for magazines such as Red,
Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan, managing their events including Red Smart Women Week
and Cosmopolitan’s Self Made Summit.
