York and District People’s Assembly is inviting everyone from the York region to join community leaders in an online public meeting at 7pm on Sunday July 26th

York, North Yorkshire –The Covid-19 crisis has further exposed the inequality and deprivation that is rife in Britain today and its impact on York and the surrounding districts is no exception. Many issues such as the climate crisis, racism and privatisation of public services were evident beforehand, but others such as pressures on food banks, disabled people and the NHS have increased tenfold since.

Politicians of all shades tell us that there will be no going back to the old ways of doing things after the pandemic, but what should this ‘new normal’ look like? And what role can ordinary people play in shaping its development?

York and District People’s Assembly have brought together speakers who are fighting for a better world from a variety of organisations across the York district and will be sharing their views of what needs to be done. The overall objective is to find common ground and common purpose for a new post-Covid society.

Speakers include:

  • Community organisers running independent  food banks battling food & child poverty across the city.
  • Climate, anti-racist and NHS activists.
  • Union representatives from Acorn and TUC, York.
  • Campaigners from Disabled People Against Cuts

As Corinne Pearson, the York and District People’s Assembly Key Convenor explains,

‘’Now is our time to unite, rise up and say no more to over a decade of cuts and austerity that has plunged so many communities, vulnerable people and workers into poverty, job insecurity and a general lack of prospects for themselves and their children’s future. There is strength in unity and together we are powerful.”

The York and District People’s Assembly are encouraging all York residents to tune in on Sunday, July 26th, 7pm and join this all important discussion.

There will be opportunities to engage with speakers via Q&A sessions and share thoughts with the broader community via online forums. Details for joining can be found below:
