Work Experience
If you’re looking for a career in the media, YO1 Radio may just be able to help.
The team behind YO1 Radio has more experience in the radio industry than many of us care to think about. Not just the on-air side of it – but the whole backroom side too. From presenting to production, news, sport, marketing, promotion, events, administration, and general management. All these elements come together to make for a successful station.
We also believe in young people – and the future of our industry. We know how important it is to find the people who will take YO1 Radio (or any other radio station for that matter) forward.
We understand that radio, and media in general, is a very difficult industry to break into. We’ve all travelled that journey for ourselves – and we are here to tell the tale. The classic ‘Catch 22’ of needing experience to get a break – but needing the break to get that experience.
Over the years, the team at YO1 Radio have helped countless people progress their careers in media, including some very well-known faces and voices.
That’s why we are happy to provide Work experience opportunities to the right people.
We should point out that we are never short of ‘applicants’ so we very rarely need to go searching. It’s all down to you.
If you think you can bring something to YO1 Radio – and maybe get your foot in the media door, we’d love to hear from you.
What WE are looking for
We are looking for self-motivated and enthusiastic people who are willing to learn and get involved in all aspects of the operation of a radio station.
We are looking for people who are genuinely interested in radio or media – and you’ll need to be able to convince us that is the case.
You might be at university in York or nearby, studying a relevant subject. You might live in our area and be at university elsewhere. You might not be at university at all but want to make the break into the media business.
Generally, we will give preference to local people or those studying locally
You will need to be able to allocate some of your time to getting involved – at least a few hours per week to make it meaningful.
You’ll almost certainly need to be over the age of 18. Sorry.
What YOU can expect from US
We’ll get you involved in the running of a radio station. We’ll make sure you know that it isn’t all about playing songs on the radio.
Whilst expecting you to ‘muck in’ where needed, we will take the time to identify where your aspirations lie – be that presenting, journalism, sport, social media, marketing and promotions, sales – and we’ll aim to give you opportunities and, where appropriate, training in those areas.
We know a lot of people. And, as we all know, it is often a case of ‘who you know’ rather than ‘what you know’
We make no promises. And there’s probably no money in it for you. At least not at the start. But we do employ people who have started via a work experience placement.
How to Apply
The starting point is to make contact.
Our Operations Director and Head of News, Dave Parker, looks after our Work Experience and Volunteer placements.
Send him an email and tell him why we should talk to you.
