Carers consulted during Carer’s Week on much-needed breaks

Carer’s Week 5-11 June

During Carer’s Week (5-11 June) and to support carers and the invaluable work they do in York, a consultation has been launched to improve breaks for carers.

We understand from feedback from carers that the caring role can be rewarding as well as challenging. We know that having breaks can make all the difference.

Carer's breaks might include short regular opportunities or longer, more complex breaks – and the whole spectrum in between. We’re looking for ways to improve carer's breaks in the way they are developed and offered as well as ensuring more flexibility to meet the varying needs of carers.

Your input into the survey will help shape the way we provide assessments and support to carers of all ages in the future.

The consultation is open to:

  • Adult or young carers
  • Anyone who cares for an adult or a child
  • Paid and unpaid carers
  • Anyone who works to support carers.

Councillor Jo Coles, Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care at City of York Council, said:

“From our brilliant paid carer workforce to those who provide unpaid care for loved ones, every carer plays a hugely important role in looking after some of the most vulnerable people in our city. And we need to ensure all carers get the breaks they need.

"This consultation is part of that process. If you're a carer in York please take a few minutes to share your experience. It's really important that carers’ voices are heard so that we can ensure they are properly supported and get the breaks they need."

The York Carers consultation will run throughout Carer’s Week and until 9 August 2023 at www.york.gov.uk/consultations#carer
