Children in care groups shortlisted for a national award

York’s Children in Care council and the Care Leavers Forum have been shortlisted for a prestigious national award recognising work to help children in care in the city.

They have been shortlisted in the participation category in the A National Voice Awards, for their work with the council.

There are a wide range of initiatives in the city to support children in care with a focus on giving them a voice to influence policies and decisions relating to their support. There is also the opportunity for them to influence the information that they want and need to have from the council and much more, for which the Children in Care Council and Care Leavers Forum have been recognised.

Councillor Bob Webb, Executive Member for Children and Young People said: “Supporting children in care is one of our most significant responsibilities as a council and one we take incredibly seriously.

“I’m delighted that our children in care have been recognised at a national level. Through initiatives such as ‘Show Me That I Matter’ and 'I Still Matter’ we recognise how important it is to listen and involve children in care, allowing them to express their views so we can better support them to be safe, healthy and happy.

“I’ve been privileged to meet some of the children involved in these groups and am always inspired by them and the work of officers in this area. It is great for them to be shortlisted. Regardless of the outcome at the awards ceremony there is so much to be proud of and I look forward to this work continuing to make a difference to the lives of our children in care in the years to come.”

A winner will be confirmed on Wednesday 25 October.
