Clifford’s Tower commemoration event returns in honour of Jewish residents

City of York Council will host an event on Thursday 16 March to commemorate and mark the anniversary of the 1190 massacre of York’s Jewish population.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend the event at Clifford’s Tower and recognise this important day in York’s history.

The Lord Mayor will be in attendance, and guests will be invited to listen to music and guest speakers from English Heritage and York Interfaith. The event will be concluded with prayer.

The event will begin from 6:30pm at The Castle Museum and will run until 7:30pm. It will be free of charge and accessible for all. Booking is not required.

Councillor Darryl Smalley, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Communities, said:

“It is important that, as a city, we come together to commemorate the 1190 massacre and reflect on both past and present persecutions. By being vigilant in our opposition to hatred, discrimination and oppression – and vigilant in defence of peace, respect and human rights – we can work together to stop division and the spread of hatred in our society.”

The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor David Carr, said:

“I am honoured to be able to attend this annual event, which provides us all with an opportunity for commemoration and reflection. It gives York’s diverse and inclusive communities the chance to come together once again and I hope that we will be joined by residents from across the city.”

Sam Borin, Holocaust Memorial Day Steering Committee Chair, said:

“This is a chance to reflect not only on events in the past, but on how we can work together to put a stop to division in our society. It is vital that we remember those who have lost their lives and take positive action to make a difference and promote peace.”
