Going in, not missing out

After the long summer holidays, it’s natural for pupils to feel a bit worried about going back to school, but teachers and education leaders in York are reminding young people and their families that there are lots of great reasons why heading into school will be something they don’t want to miss out on.

Going to school each day can help children to make friends, keep up with their learning, increase their confidence and get lots of new experiences.

Cllr Bob Webb, the council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education – himself a teacher – explained:

“Going to school every day really helps children and young people to develop, learn and grow in a stable and secure place with their friends and peers.

“Encouraging your child to attend school every day is a really positive thing to do and schools really want to work with families to highlight the benefits that learning together bring for children.”

James Rourke, Headteacher at Lord Deramore's Primary School, said:

“The start of a new school year is a great time to start new routines and get into good habits.

“We've got lots of fun things planned for the new term, including our Year 6 residential visit to Dobroyd Castle plus lots of class trips to places like the National Science and Media Museum, York Minster, St Nick's Nature Reserve, the Castle Museum and York Mosque. We've even organised a Victorian school re-enactment day as part of the children's history studies.

“Schools are here to support all families with school attendance so do reach out to us if your child is struggling.”
