Making young people of York smile this Christmas

York City Football Club Foundation

For many of us, Christmas is a magical time, however, for some families and young people, it can often cause added stress and difficulty. And for those with a loved one, especially a young person, in hospital at Christmas time, it is really tough.

As always, staff at York City Football Club Foundation with players from York City, have been spreading a little festive cheer across the City.

Paula Stainton, Foundation Manager, said: “We have been providing gifts to young people facing Christmas in Hospital for over 15 years.

“We are all about making a difference and this is about bringing smiles to children’s faces, especially at this time of year. One of the parents told us it was the first time her daughter had smiled all day, and that is what it is about for us. Especially, as that was after we promised to invite her to a MinsterBelles game when she is feeling better in the new year, which made my day in return!

“The annual Children’s Ward visit is a highlight for us and players, as much as it is for staff and patients at York District Hospital.”

Players from York City, both men’s and women’s squads, went along on Thursday afternoonto chat with the Play Team staff, meet the patients and their families, and hand out a range of presents.

Ladies player, Faye Singleton reflected on the visit, saying: “I am really grateful for the opportunity to visit York Hospital as a York City Ladies player with some of the York City Men’s team. It was lovely to chat with the children and parents, and I hope we were able to bring a little joy to their day.”

York City striker Dipo Akinyemi commented: “Being at the hospital always brings you down to earth. Sometimes we complain but we have to be thankful that we are healthy and in good spirits. I’m happy that I got to do my part in making the kids good and in the Christmas spirit.”

In addition to the gift bags donated to York District Hospital, the Foundation team have donated toiletries and toys to the City of York Council Care Leavers Team and to Support and Education workers supporting homeless young people in the City.
