Music spanning six centuries in Selby Abbey Organ Recital

Just a reminder that Selby Abbey’s own Director of Music, Oliver Waterer, will give the 6th in this year’s series of Celebrity Lunchtime Organ Recitals this Tuesday at 12.30pm.

Oliver was appointed to his present role at Selby in September 2022 and is responsible for maintaining and developing the Abbey’s choral tradition. He is ‘custodian’ of the Abbey’s famous Hill organ, combining these duties with his freelance career as an organist and conductor. Before moving to Selby he was Organist and Master of the Choristers at St David’s Cathedral in Wales and Artistic Director of St. David’s Cathedral Festival. He studied at Birmingham Conservatoire and has held posts at Guildford, Peterborough and Chelmsford Cathedrals and at Her Majesty’s Chapels Royal at St. James’ Palace.

His organ recital programme on Tuesday spans six centuries, featuring works by William Byrd and Olivier Messiaen amongst others, and concludes with William Walton’s noble ‘Crown Imperial’ which will celebrate the splendour of the Abbey’s 4,000 pipe Hill organ.

The recitals commence at 12.30pm, last approximately one hour and admission is free. Donations towards the Abbey’s music  and fabric are welcomed.
