York City FC have announced the appointment of Neil Cox as the club’s new assistant manager, working alongside Neal Ardley and Tony McMahon.

The 51-year-old has worked with manager Neal Ardley previously at AFC Wimbledon and Notts County.

Cox is also familiar working together with Tony McMahon, having had McMahon in his coaching staff at Scunthorpe United.

The former Scunthorpe boss joins the Minstermen having had just shy of two years away from football, having departed the Iron in November 2021.

Speaking on linking up with Neal Ardley again, he said: ““It’s another big challenge for me, looking forward to coming back in.

“We’ve worked together and had success at other clubs where we’ve been to, I can’t wait to get started.

“I know how the manager wants to play; we’ve been friends for a long time, but we’ve worked together a long time too.

“We’re here to try and do a really good job for this football club.”

Reflecting on his time away from the game, Cox stated: “I’ve been out the game a long time now, but I’ve been to more games now than I ever have been.

“I’ll be a calmer influence now than I was when I was first in a manager’s job.

“You learn a lot when you’re out of work because you see things more, everything’s a little bit clearer.”

Having had two days with the squad so far, Cox believes there’s a lot in there but work still has to be done.

“There’s a lot of positives, they’re just lacking a bit of confidence at the moment, and that was our job in the first two days by getting some confidence back into them.

“Next week will be a big week for them all because they’re going to get to know us a bit better, how we want to train, and how we are going to train.

“The tempo between Thursday to Friday increased, so we’re hoping to get a good kickstart on Saturday.

Welcome to the Minstermen, Neil!
