Men arrested after suspected break-in at York sports club

North Yorkshire Police, News

Five burglary suspects were arrested last night, after vigilant residents reported suspicious activity at a York cricket club.

At 10pm on Tuesday 2 January, North Yorkshire Police received 999 calls reporting that a number of men wearing dark clothing were trying to break in to Heworth Cricket Club, and had then left the scene in a white van.

Officers responded immediately, and the van was identified and picked up on CCTV cameras. It was stopped by police a short time later on Tang Hall Lane. Inside were five men, and a search of the vehicle uncovered several screwdrivers, pairs of gloves and balaclavas, and a pair of pliers and a crowbar.

At the scene itself, investigating officers found that a garage shutter appeared to have been damaged and opened, and items inside had been moved.

All five men inside the van, from the Leeds area, were arrested on suspicion of burglary. One was further arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing today. North Yorkshire Police are reminding sports clubs to check their security and ensure all valuable items are kept locked and secure, or ideally stored off-site.
