A display of ‘mechanical veterans’ – military vehicles preserved by owners and enthusiasts - is underway in the centre of York today (April 13).

The Yorkshire branch of the Military Vehicle Trust (MVT) is hosting one of the largest one-day gatherings of military vehicles in the UK in the Eye of York from 10.30am to 4pm.

The MVT said it is the largest organisation of ex-military vehicle owners and enthusiasts in the world and is the only charity dedicated to 'keeping our mechanical veterans alive'.

A convoy of vehicles left Tadcaster at 10.30am this morning, passing along the A64 and through Fulford.

Chris Smyth, one of the organisers of the Yorkshire Area Crank-Up said the show started over 25 years ago on the site and is the branch’s first rally of the season.

He said people always come and want to talk about the history of the vehicles and some even ask about how they go about acquiring one of their own.

Chris said the MVT have their own website where members see adverts for vehicles for sale but enthusiasts can find sites through social media which specialise in buying and selling, as well as sourcing parts.
