A driver has been jailed for a high speed crash in York that nearly killed a nursery nurse and led to her leg being amputated.

York Crown Court heard that Scott David Bradley was doing between 50mph and 54mph in the 30mph speed limit area along Acomb Road in Holgate during the morning rush hour.

His car hit the 28-year-old woman as she was crossing the road en route to the nursery where she worked.

Judge Simon Hickey praised the three “public spirited” men who saved her life by applying a tourniquet and giving her first aid at the scene.

But doctors were unable to save her leg, which, the judge said, was “effectively severed” in the crash.

Acomb Road was closed from the junction outside The Fox pub to New Lane throughout the morning following the crash while police carried out investigations and cleared the road. The closure caused considerable traffic delays on nearby routes.
