It comes after the Prime Minister warned the NHS is “on its knees”, as nurses nationally admit there is “barely a spare bed” in the entire health service.
NHS England figures show an average of 832 beds at the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were occupied each day in the week to December 1.
It means around 94 per cent of beds at the trust, which runs York and Scarborough hospitals, were occupied the week commencing November 11 – in line with the year before, and the highest proportion for this time of year since 2020-21.
The figures exclude 2021-22 as comparable figures were not provided.
A York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson told The Press: “Bed occupancy can vary by day and is at its highest when we are experiencing high levels of demand particularly for unplanned, acute admissions.
“Since the pandemic, our hospitals have been particularly busy as we see levels of activity rising to above pre-pandemic levels.”
Nationally, 96,587 hospital beds were occupied each day in the week beginning November 11 – more than have been recorded at this point in any other year.
