A SIDE road close to a major development in York is closed this week.

Bar Lane off Micklegate will be closed at its junction close to the Bar Wall this week for water supply works to be carried out.

The stretch of road is outside a building site where an aparthotel with a new bar and restaurant is being built.

As The Press reported at the time, back in 2021 Supercity Aparthotels confirmed they secured the site after reaching a deal with York-based North Star to develop the aparthotel.

It is replacing vacant commercial units on the street, which previously housed a van hire centre and a restaurant.

It follows the closure of Micklegate at its junction with Bar Lane which took place on Sunday, January 12.

Before demolition took place the disused Minster Vans property at 111 Micklegate was temporarily home to a vibrant pop-up space for artists and crafters in a partnership between Social Vision and developers North Star to help grassroots organisations showcase their work.

Planning permission was granted in 2020 to redevelop the site, with the application stating it would create around 45 new jobs.

Designed by leading architects Vincent & Brown, the development aims to deliver a contemporary building that complements the Georgian character of Micklegate.
