MySight, a York-based charity which helps people with sight loss navigate the challenges of day-to-day life, has now opened the doors on its new home.
They will be based on ground floor of The Press building in Walmgate, with The Press editorial and advertising department remaining on the top floor.
Having previously been located in Rougier Street and Merchantgate, the new location will allow MySight a space in the city centre for visitors to access the charity's services.
The new premises, which can be accessed through the front doors of The Press building in Walmgate, offer step free and easy access to the multitude of services offered by the charity, with counselling services, equipment testing, and social groups all housed under one roof.
The Walmgate site, combined with an eye clinic liaison officer (ECLO) based at York Hospital and sight support assistant at York Community Stadium, creates a ‘triangle of support’ for those dealing with sight loss across the city, explained chief executive Scott Jobson. He said: “Without doubt this move represents a significant step forward for our charity, allowing us to continue and enhance our services, with improved accessibility, and provide an even more welcoming environment for York’s visually impaired community.
“Finding the right space for our charity was crucial. We wanted somewhere inclusive, easy to reach, and designed with accessibility in mind, and The York Press building offered us exactly that.”
The layout of the rooms was also considered – with the square rooms offered ensuring that there was more useable space – as was the tactile paving outside the building.

A much-loved York City Football Club fan died at the age of 23 while on holiday in Thailand, an inquest opening has heard.
