James Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash in Silver Street, Scarborough, on Saturday, March 8.
The 24-year-old of Alne, near Easingwold, was “struck by a motor vehicle and suffered a head injury from which he died”, said Jon Heath, senior coroner for York and North Yorkshire.
He said Mr Roberts' cause of death was blunt head injury.
Mr Heath adjourned the inquest this morning (Wednesday, April 9) at Northallerton Coroner’s Court.
As The Press has reported, North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to Silver Street in the early hours of March 8 following reports of a crash involving a man and a white Audi car.
“We understand that people will be shocked and concerned to hear what has happened overnight,” a police spokesperson said at the time.
They added that “high-visibility police patrols” would take place in Scarborough in the days that followed the incident to “provide reassurance to the local community”.
North Yorkshire Police has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the force spokesperson said, adding that this is a “mandatory requirement in the circumstances”.
'The world feels significantly darker without his presence,' says family
Mr Roberts’ family described him as “the most incredible man” who “viewed life as one big party and never allowed his sparkle to be dulled”.
