Plans lodged with City of York Council would see 11 artworks themed around lost churches, markets and other parts of medieval life in the city displayed in seven of its snickelways.
York BID’s application stated they aimed to tell the story of the people and animals who used the network of alleys, snickelways and ginnels in the last 1,000 years.
It come as part of a project which aims to showcase York’s snickelways and boost footfall in them.
The footprint of the routes has remained unchanged since the medieval era and they are home to historical, timber-framed buildings such as Barley Hall.
The Snickelways Rejuvenation Project has already seen the BID install festoon lighting along the passageways to improve safety and make them more attractive.
Medieval-influenced artwork would be installed in Nether Hornpot Lane, Finkle Street, Coffee Yard, Lunds Court, Le Kyrk Alley, Pope’s Head Alley and Peter Lane in the project’s next phase.
