BREAKING: Power cut hits York – hundreds in dark by unplanned outage

A power cut left hundreds of people in the dark in York.

Northern Powergrid said 855 of its customers south of Walmgate and in the Layerthorpe area were affected by the unplanned outage at 2.30pm this afternoon (Thursday, February 20).

At 3pm the company said power had been restored to 695 customers and it expected the outage to be fully resolved by 3.45pm.

"Our team have identified what's caused the power cut and are working to get your power back on," a spokesperson said.

Traffic lights at Bootham Bar and Walmgate Bar were also out due to the outage but power has since been restored.

Police officers were on the scene near Walmgate Bar directing traffic at about 2.30pm.

Cars were waiting along Foss Islands Road, Lawrence Street and Barbican Road due to the outage.

The outage resulted in YO1 Radio, which broadcasts from James Street, being off air for an hour.

"It was a terrible situation," said Wayne Chadwick, the radio station's managing director who was live on air when the outage hit.

He said the station went off air shortly after 2pm when the power cut struck but was back live from 3.10pm.

"We managed to bring a generator to get us back on air, but as soon as we connected it everything came back on," he said.

"We know what to do next time."

Speaking to The Press after power was restored, Wayne added: "It's not great, really, when that happens because it's our job to give the community information.

"I'm back on air now and I'm going to get back to it."
