Nominations are being accepted by Selby District Council for 10 categories in the awards, chosen to represent the diverse range of qualities which businesses and individuals bring to the area.
Business awards which showcased the finest companies and staff in the Selby district before the Covid-19 pandemic have now been relaunched for a final event before local authorities merge into a new council spanning the whole of North Yorkshire.
Nominations are being accepted by Selby District Council for 10 categories in the awards, chosen to represent the diverse range of qualities which businesses and individuals bring to the area.
The first Selby District Business Awards took place in 2020, but they were suspended in the two subsequent years due to the pandemic. The new awards ceremony will take place in March next year.
They will recognise the firms which provide the best services to the public, or to other businesses, together with those which have put environmental concerns at the forefront of their work, and those that have shown great promise for the future.
Individuals who have made a personal contribution will also fall under the spotlight with awards for tradespeople and an apprentice of the year.
Selby District Council’s lead executive member for communities and economic development, Cllr David Buckle, said: “These awards are very important to Selby District Council as a way of recognising the contribution that businesses and their staff make to ensuring our communities thrive.
“Businesses are built on people, and we are delighted to have categories for individuals who have played their own special part in the district’s success over the last 12 months.
“The creation of the new North Yorkshire Council means the awards cannot continue in their present form, but the final event could not be happening at a better time.
“Selby district is gaining national recognition as one of the best places in the country for those looking to relocate, and the council has done much to help encourage new businesses into the area.
“There are many which have thrived and these awards will help celebrate the efforts they have made, providing both prosperity and satisfying jobs for people in the district.”
Award categories include small/medium business of the year; another called ‘new kid on the block’, for those enterprises established less than three years, as well as tourism/leisure businesses of the year and High Street hero, for those making a special effort to support the local economy.
Other categories include an apprentice of the year, the growth business of the year, the business honoured for its environmental responsibility and the creative and digital business of the year.
The final categories include trades person of the year and the best social enterprise or community interest company.
One of the winners in 2020 was ARC Workwear and PPE Ltd, which received an award for the Small Business of the Year.
ARC Group managing director, Anthony Chapman, said: We were over the moon to win the award in the Selby District Business Awards 2020.
“This award was the result of a team effort that showed our dedication in all parts of the business to perform to the highest standards and grow our business to meet our customer’s needs.
“Selby District Council has helped us immensely over the last few years to ensure we have been on the right tracks and able to grow, and it was a wonderful boost for us to see our efforts recognised in this way.”
The new North Yorkshire Council will launch on April 1 next year following the biggest overhaul of local government in the county since 1974.
The Government has stipulated that a key requirement to secure a devolution deal is for the two-tier system of local government in North Yorkshire, with the county council and seven district and borough authorities, to be replaced by a single unitary authority.
Devolution is a key policy of the Government, handing over decision-making powers to local political leaders and providing millions of pounds in funding to shape major policies and projects on a regional level.
City of York Council will continue as a unitary authority to run in tandem with the new North Yorkshire Council.
