Demolition proposal for University House in Heslington refused

A PROPOSAL for the demolition of one of the first buildings erected on the University of York campus has been refused by officers at City of York Council.

Development officials at the council considered a prior notification for demolition application submitted by the University of York for University House in Spring Lane, architect-designed and built in the 1960s as residence for the academic institution’s vice-chancellor.

A report said that there were inadequate details provided of the how the land would be restored after demolition, including the provision of landscaping details and boundaries.

Consideration given to the influence of demolition on any protected species of bats or birds in the application site had also not been covered in the proposal, the report said.

A university spokesperson said it intends to respond to these points.

As reported in The Press, the building had remained unused for some time, refurbishment was too costly and it was not suitable for alternative uses, with the site’s future yet to be decided, according to the spokesperson.
