Serious flu cases at York's hospital trust have rocketed by more than 200 per cent in the last month - with a spike in cases arriving "earlier than last year".

Figures from York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust show a 233 per cent increases in flu patients in trust hospitals over the course of a month.

On November 29, the trust recorded 18 flu patients in its hospitals, on December 29, the number was 60 - with two in critical care.

It matches the trend nationally, with health secretary Wes Streeting telling the House of Commons on January 6: "The number of beds occupied with flu is much higher than last year – somewhere between three to four times as many beds occupied by flu patients this time than last year.

"The number of adult beds closed due to norovirus has reduced for the latest figures but is still above last year when 485 beds were closed – latest figures show 666."
