Strong winds and heavy rain are set to batter York as the city braces for the arrival of Storm Darragh.

Met Office forecasters expect rain from 5pm today (Friday, December 6) with gusts becoming stronger throughout the day, reaching 40mph tonight.

A yellow warning for wind and rain is in place until Sunday.

York is expected to face the worst of the storm on Saturday with gusts of almost 60mph forecast in the afternoon and heavy rain throughout the day.

Rain is also forecast for Sunday morning, changing to clouds by late afternoon.

No flood warnings have been issued for York this morning, but the Environment Agency has said that flooding is likely this afternoon at riverside areas in the city.

The River Ouse was at 1.9m – the top of its normal range – at 9.15am and rising.

It is expected to peak at 2.52m at 6.30pm then start to fall, before rising again tomorrow morning.

Areas of the city centre, including Bootham and Bridge Street, saw flash flooding last night after heavy rainfall.
