As The Press has reported, the post office is within Morrisons Daily in The Village and is due to close at 5.30pm on Sunday, April 13, amid nationwide cuts by the supermarket chain.
Billy Ware, partner account manager for the Post Office, said the Post Office is working with Morrisons which “suggested” that The Village branch could move to the supermarket’s store in Oak Tree Lane, just under a mile away.
A Post Office spokesperson told The Press the vacancy is also being advertised on its website.
Mr Ware, in a letter to residents, said The Village Morrisons Daily, which operates the branch on behalf of the Post Office, has been making a loss despite its “best efforts”.
“We recognise a post office service is of particular importance to the local community and have undertaken a review of the post office services in the local area to inform our next steps,” he said.
“We want to maintain a post office in Haxby.”
Haxby and Wigginton ward councillor Andrew Hollyer told The Press it is “good that the Post Office acknowledges that they want to see a post office in Haxby”.
But he said: “I’m sceptical about the Oak Tree Lane location because it’s a small store with not great parking.
