The salary to run several closed pubs in York has been increased by the brewery that owns them.

adcaster-based Samuel Smith's Brewery owns several pubs in York which have been closed for varying amounts of time - with the most recent being The Wellington Inn in Fishergate.

Once closed, the brewery advertises for new managers to run all of their sites, typically as a couple who are offered a split salary.

These salaries have increased over the years in a bid to reopen some of their sites. Notably the York Arms, High Petergate, has been closed since before the pandemic.

In early 2024, the brewery offered a salary of £47,000 for a couple to reopen the York Arms. Their latest offering, as of January 13, is a salary of £51,700 - which splits to £25,850 each.
