'This is just the beginning' - teacher walks 10K and raises £1,000 after amputation

A WOMAN who asked surgeons to amputate her leg following a year of intense pain has thrown herself into a gruelling challenge to help others.

Annette Oliver underwent the life-changing surgery at York Hospital after other operations failed to ease the pain she had been suffering since losing circulation in her lower right leg.

"I was in almost constant pain and didn’t really sleep for a year," said the 64-year-old. "We had tried everything and there was nothing else that could be done so, I decided to stop fighting the battle and start again.”

Buoyed by the pain relief resulting from the amputation, which was done last November, Annette took on a 10K walk around Castle Bolton in Leyburn within a month of receiving her prosthetic leg.

Annette, from Camblesforth, is a Latin and Classics teacher and head of sixth form at Read School in Drax. She also leads the RAF section of the school’s CCF (Combined Cadet Force) - a partnership with the Ministry of Defence enabling cadets to develop skills such as leadership and endurance.
