WHAT’S the score? A question heard at matches across the country, but not at York’s newest non-competitive football club.

Meet Gals FC, the fast-growing women’s club rebelling against keeping score. Established shortly after England’s success at Euro 2022,

the club is the brainchild of best friends Lorne Magill and Nora Beqaj.

The pair believe the best way to get women playing football is to forgo the scores altogether, with an ethos that is instead centred on building a community of fun, friendship and confidence.

Instead of referees, Gals FC has ‘vibe protectors’, volunteers whose role is to make sure nobody takes things too seriously.

In fact, the only thing they keep track of and reward is session attendance.

You might question the appeal of such a club, but it’s already proved a big hit in London, Brighton and Ipswich, with 11 ‘communities’ and more than 250 members.

York marks Gals FC’s first expansion in the north, with the club also hoping to establish itself in Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester.

“We’re so excited to see Gals FC grow into York, our first northern city,” said Magill.

“Some people don’t believe us when we say that they can play football, but with Gals FC you really can.

“We don’t keep score, if anyone scores a goal we cheer whatever team you are on.

“I feel so lucky to be building this amazing community in the world of women’s football, there is so much opportunity.”
