York's sports awards are back - and this year they're being hosted at an iconic venue.

The YO1 Radio Sports Awards 2025 will be coming to York Barbican on June 19, as it's time to crown the city's best sportspeople, coaches, teams and communities.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing the Sports Awards back this year," said Wayne Chadwick, managing director of YO1 Radio & Media.

Taking over from the longstanding Active York awards, The Press has joined forces with YO1 Radio to celebrate the city and its sport.

Wayne added: "We'd like to thank Paula Stainton of the York City FC Foundation and Keith Morris of the University of York who have worked tirelessly for many years to organise previous events.

"We're really pleased to have them as advisers on our team for the 2025 awards, together with our media partners at The Press."

Paula Stainton, the manager of the York City FC Foundation, said she was "delighted" to help in bringing the sports awards back.

"There are so many incredible athletes, competing in so many sports representing our city, who deserve to be celebrated and for the wider community to hear more about them," Paula said. "It’s always amazing to recognise the invaluable efforts of the coaches, volunteers, schools, grassroots clubs and other organisations who champion sport and physical activity, and are so often the unsung heroes."

Nominations open today (February 11) and close on Friday, March 28. With 12 prizes up for grabs, categories range from young sportsperson of the year to volunteer of the year, and from coach of the year to disability sportsperson of the year.

Wayne said: "Our area has such an amazing wealth of sporting talent, and we want to celebrate that with a very special evening of awards and entertainment.

"But this is not just about highlighting the talents and successes of our high-profile clubs, it is also about recognising the amazing work that goes on at our grassroots clubs, in our schools, colleges, universities and workplaces.

"It is about celebrating the hard work of those who strive to be brilliant at any sport, together with those who support them."

Keith Morris, head of sport at the University of York, said: "I am lucky to have been involved in the Sport awards in the city for nearly decade as an ex Chair of active York and as head of Sport at the University of York so I'm delighted that YO1 have been able to reinstate the event and to provide a platform to celebrate those deserving recognition for their performances, effort and commitment to sport and activity in the city.

"Having a sports awards for the city is essential to showcasing the many people, teams, clubs, schools and organisations who are doing such impactful work at all levels and if previous awards evenings are anything to go by it will be an inspirational evening and celebration."

To nominate yourself, or someone else for a category, simply scan the QR code - or follow the link here. Multiple nominations can be made, by filling out separate forms.

Wayne added: "We are planning a very special evening at The Barbican, where we can create a fantastic atmosphere with loads of surprises, entertainment and some special guests along the way.

"It's time to get your thinking caps on and nominate the team or individual from York, Selby, or the surrounding areas, who you think deserves that special recognition on stage in June."
