City launches children’s foil competition this Christmas

Primary school students across York are being invited to take part in a competition highlighting the importance of recycling aluminium foil at the kerbside this Christmas.

Recent changes to recycling in the city, mean that the council are now able to collect foil from residents in their kerbside collections. To celebrate this change, we have teamed up with the not-for-profit organisation, Alupro, to hold a competition open to primary schools in York.

We are challenging students to create Christmas themed A4 posters with used and washed aluminium foil and any other art supplies available. The poster design can be anything to do with Christmas and must contain foil to be included in our prize draw.

The winning student will receive prizes worth £50, and their school will receive £500 in vouchers to spend on sustainable supplies and activities. There will be similar prizes available to runners up in second and third place.

Students will be able to sign up for the competition through their schools, and we will be accepting entries from 28 November 2022 to Tuesday 31 January 2023.

The winning posters will be announced in February 2023, and will be displayed, along with the runners up, on our website.

At Christmas time aluminium foil can be found all around your home, from mince pie cases and roasting trays to chocolate wrapping foil and the lids on cream pots. Just give your aluminium foil a quick wipe or rinse and then it’s ready to be recycled in your black recycling bin.

City of York Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change, Councillor Paula Widdowson said: “It is wonderful to see local schoolchildren being given the chance to learn more about recycling this Christmas.

“Our long-term vision is to create a cleaner, greener city and this competition to raise awareness of what can be recycled at the kerbside is just the latest step in our work to expand and improve recycling and waste services across York.

“We know residents are doing a fantastic job of recycling in York, with around 43 per cent of all waste being either reused, recycled or composted. The addition of foil to kerbside collections will help us further boost our recycling rates and continue our work to make York greener and cleaner.”

Tom Giddings, Executive Director of Alupro, added: “We’re looking forward to seeing the posters the children submit from across the schools in York. From experience, initiatives like this really help to improve resident engagement and improve recycling rates, so we’re expecting hugely positive results!

“The great thing about aluminium is that it’s infinitely recyclable – you can melt it down and reform it to create new products or packaging materials time and time again.”
