York is amongst only 122 cities across the world to be awarded an A rating for climate action leadership by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
In 2022 more than 1,000 cities worldwide participated in the project, filing their plans and projects alongside reporting results. York has been recognized by CDP amongst only 122 cities across the globe which are taking bold leadership on environmental action and transparency.
The Climate Strategy and Action Plan, developed by the Council with the input of many partners over the last 2 years, was judged to clearly demonstrate the city’s vision and action to combat climate change. The A-rating recognises this work and highlights that York is delivering twice as many climate mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A Listers.
CDP is an environmental impact not-for-profit company that has monitored and measured the performance, over the last 2 decades, of investors, companies, cities, states and regions. The A list is designed to encourage and support cities to ramp up their climate action and ambition.
York, and the other 121 cities on this year’s A-List, are also celebrated for showing that urgent and impactful climate action - from ambitious emissions reduction targets to building resilience against climate change - is achievable at a global level, and in cities with different climate realities and priorities.
Councillor Keith Aspden, Leader of the City of York Council, commented:
“It is fantastic to be amongst the 122 cities globally to have received this high recognition. It speaks to the quality of the work that has gone into the development of our climate change strategy and action plan.
"No organisation can deliver impact change of this scale alone. I would like to thank the many partners, community groups and residents that have helped to create our plans and fully share this high recognition."
Councillor Paula Widdowson, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change, said:
“This recognition is a significant achievement and demonstrates that York is a global leader in climate action.
“A-rated cities like York are demonstrating their climate leadership through concerted and effective action, just as national governments have been asked to do at COP27. We are amongst the cities which take twice as many mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A List cities. Despite this, we are clear that we are at the beginning of our journey and there is still lots to do to ensure we build a sustainable and green city for the benefit of future generations.”
