York City has announced the signing of 28-year-old winger Nathan Thomas.

Thomas joins as a free transfer and has initially signed a deal that will keep him with the Minstermen until January subject to international clearance.

Arriving with plenty of experience in the Football League and in Scotland, Thomas said he was ‘over the moon’ to get the move over the line.

He said: “It’s been a long time since I’ve been attached with a club.

“I’m delighted, I’ve been with the club quite a while already. I’ve been in for about six or seven weeks to get myself up to a standard of being able to play.

“So, I’m over the moon to finally get it over the line.”

Last plying his trade in the Scottish Premiership with Hamilton Academical during the 2020/21 season, the winger able to play on either side has previously impressed with the likes of Carlisle United, Hartlepool United, and Notts County in the Football League.

Having developed in the academies at Newcastle United and Sunderland, Thomas made his break into senior professional football at Plymouth Argyle having previously played on loan lower down the pyramid with Darlington.

Spells with Motherwell and Mansfield Town followed, ahead of an impressive stint at Hartlepool United where his nine goals in 33 League Two appearances in 2016/17 caught the attention of Championship side Sheffield United.

From the Blades, he had loan spells with Shrewsbury Town, Notts County, and two spells at Carlisle.

He again showed his eye for both creating and scoring goals, contributing 13 goals in 57 appearances for the Cumbrians, nine of which were scored in League Two.

Thomas has been training with City for some time as he worked to get back to fitness after some time out of the game.

Having already had a chance to settle into the group, he admitted that the way he has settled in with the squad in training made the decision to sign easier, saying: “From day one the lads have welcomed me in and been really good.

“Especially the manager as well because the levels I was at when I first came in compared to now, it did take a little bit of patience.

“They’ve looked after me, I’ve really enjoyed it which made signing so much easier.”
